We live in a society where all of our time and energy seems to be accounted for. If I asked you how you are, you’d probably tell me you’re busy. It’s our default answer. We fill our days with all of the things that we think we should be doing and all of the distractions meant to keep us from doing the things that we don’t want to do. I am very guilty of this. I can come up with a million reasons why I don’t have the time for something, just to turn around and spend 30 straight minutes scrolling aimlessly on Instagram.
Why are we like this?
We all have goals and dreams that we want to accomplish, so why do we sabotage our own success? It’s not always a conscious decision. It can stem from a place of fear or insecurity or disinterest. Still, no matter what the reason, we spend a lot of time making things harder for ourselves. We don’t hold ourselves accountable, or we put too much on our plates and beat ourselves up when we don’t accomplish everything we set out to do.
What are your non-negotiables?
I heard this term on a Food Heaven Made Easy podcast and it really spoke to me. What are the things that you need to do each day, month or year to get you where you need to go? What are the rewards and consequences that you can put into place that will keep you accountable without discouraging you? Having an understanding of the goals that you want to achieve and the things that you must do to meet those goals will give you a sense of purpose and direction.
Your non-negotiables should be things that are attainable and productive. Done regularly, they will give you a sense of stability and accomplishment. Would establish a specific morning routine work for you? Can you incorporate specific self-care practices into your daily schedule that will remind you to prioritize your wellbeing? What relationships do you need in your life in order to be happy and healthy, and how can you nurture those?
When you eliminate your excuses for why you can’t do something, you’ll be amazed at what you find yourself to be capable of. When you make something non-negotiable, you take the choice out of it. You tell your brain that it is something that you must do. You establish a sense of discipline, even if you don’t consider yourself a particularly disciplined person. You prove to yourself that you can show up for yourself.
Make a list of your non-negotiables in your wellness, your relationships, your career, and your happiness. Set boundaries. Hold yourself responsible for your future and watch it come to be.
