Why You Should Be Drinking More Water

drinking water

When asked what their secret to shiny hair, clear skin or slim waistlines are, many celebs will say the same thing: “I drink a lot of water”. It’s almost annoying in its simplicity. I was brought up to believe that drinking water is the cure to almost everything. Still, I don’t drink nearly as much as I should, and I know I’m not alone in this.

The truth is, water is not the be-all and end-all of health and beauty. Many factors contribute to how our insides function, which we then see reflected on our outsides. Diet, fitness, hygiene and general maintenance all play their parts as well. However, dehydration and its consequences are not to be taken lightly, and its benefits are definitely worth the extra trip to the Brita.

6 Benefits of Drinking Water:

1. Boosts digestion:

Chugging water first thing in the morning hydrates your body and gets your digestive system moving. When you wake up, your body has been without water for hours. Having a glass or two when you get out of bed will help start you off on the right foot.

2. Increases energy

While water isn’t likely to replace your morning coffee, staying hydrated will make you feel more energized and less sluggish by providing your body with what it needs to function more efficiently. It also improves mental clarity so that you’re likely to have a more productive day.

3. Promotes weight loss:

Studies show that drinking water may increase your metabolism and cause you to burn more calories. Having a glass before meals also curbs cravings, keeps you from overeating and aids your body in the digestion process.

4. Reduces bloating:

You would think it would be counterproductive to drink water to reduce the appearance of water weight, but when you drink water regularly, your body doesn’t feel the need to store it for later. The same is true for food. Make sure to fuel your body regularly throughout the day.

5. Detoxifies the body:

Not only does water help your digestive track, liver and kidneys flush toxins from the body, it also transfers nutrients to where they’re needed. When you’re dehydrated, these systems can low down and get backed up, leading to illnesses and other complications.

6. Clears skin:

Breakouts and skin issues are often caused by dietary or hormonal issues within the body. Drinking water helps keep your body balanced, which will give you skin that is brighter, more glowy and less prone to pimples and dark spots.

For some reason, even though we all know water is essential for our bodies, it’s not always easy to make sure you’re drinking enough of it. Adding fruits and veggies like lemon or cucumber will infuse your water with additional nutrients, while making it a little easier to increase your intake.

Buying a larger water bottle will also help you visualize how much you need to drink each day, and give you a set goal to meet. The key is to keep water within reach at all times and sip throughout the day. Be consistent. Your body will thank you.
