Spring Cleaning for Good Vibes

The beginning of spring is always therapeutic for me. Things are growing and the days are getting longer and there’s more sun.  I live in LA, so we don’t have much of a winter–we essentially live in a perpetual spring–but months and months of cold and darkness can start to take its toll.

Regardless of where you live, there is a resurgence of energy that happens this time of year and, if you harness it properly, it can boost your mood, increase your productivity and, in my personal experience, inspire you to get your life together. Sounds great, right? So how do we harness this mystical energy? You’re going to have to work for it.

Here are 7 steps to spring clean for vibes on vibes on vibes.

  1. Minimize.  So we’re all kind of hoarders in our own way. It’s fine. I hoard notebooks and beauty products. I’ve gotten better about it recently, but who’s perfect? The key is to figure out what it is that you hold on to and ask yourself if you actually need it. If the answer is yes, then ask yourself when you plan to use it. If the answer is something vague like “soon” or “eventually”, get rid of it. If you can’t bring yourself to throw it away, give it to a friend who will actually use it or drop it off at Goodwill. The hardest part of this process is starting, so if you’re struggling check out  The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo and get to work.
  2. Go through your closet.  Since we’re purging, it’s time to weed through your wardrobe. This is its own separate bullet point because, if you’re anything like me, this is emotional. How do you get rid of clothes? What if that dress comes back in style? You’re going to lose that weight and then those jeans will fit again. I get it. I feel you. But generally speaking, if you haven’t worn something in the past 12 months, you’re probably not going to wear it again. Even if your closet is huge, you tend to have your go-to outfits that get more play than others. Those are your staples. For everything else, it’s time to make some tough decisions. Create keep, toss and sell piles, and trade the sell pieces in at places like Buffalo Exchange for things you’ll actually wear.
  3. Clean.  I’m sure this goes without saying, but actually clean. This is the time to get into those areas that we usually neglect, like sweeping behind furniture or dusting off shelves. If you’re someone with seasonal allergies, you may be currently living your personal hell. You can help alleviate those symptoms a bit by getting rid of allergens like dust mites and pet hair in your home. Cleaning is cathartic. It may not feel that way initially, but you’ll be happy once it’s done.
  4. Organize/Redecorate.  Now that you’ve done all of the hard work, it’s time to make things cute. If you’re not a HGTV kind of person, this may hold very little appeal to you. But if Target is your Mecca then come with me on a trip to the land of Nate Berkus. You can give your home an entirely new vibe with very little effort/money just by swapping out curtains or throw pillows and finding new ways to organize. If you’re feeling crafty, the list of DIY projects on Pinterest is endless.
  5.  Buy plants.  Plants elevate any space. Not only do they literally bring life into a room and filter the air, but they also make the room look cleaner and more polished. If you’re not confident in your ability to keep a plant alive, there are lower maintenance plants that don’t require much care, like cactuses and succulents. If you’re like “No, I’ll kill those too” maybe opt for a faux plant. We all have our limitations.
  6. Burn things.  I blame LA entirely for what I’m about to say, but I highly recommend buying some incense, sage or palo santo to burn. Now that your place is clean, organized and newly revamped, it is just as important to make sure that you’re establishing a good vibe with positive energy. By that, I mean that your house should be a calm place for you. Even if you’re not into energy and vibes, just the act of having something burning in your home is relaxing, and has aromatherapeutic properties. Soy candles and oil defusers are also great ways to get that spa feeling at home.
  7. Maintain your space.  My home tends to be a reflection of how hectic my life is at the moment. The crazier things get, the bigger the pile of clothes on the floor or the stack of dishes in the sink. What I’ve found is, the more time you spend creating a space that you actually want to spend time in, the more likely you’ll be to maintain that. It takes less of your energy to clean as you go. It’s the accumulation of mess that is overwhelming. There are a lot of elements of your life that are out of your control, but your home and how you feel about it are not.
